UC Merced ranks among the top universities in the nation, according to a new report by Money magazine that scored over 700 four-year colleges.

To compile its annual "Best Colleges in America" list, Money examined several criteria, including quality of education, affordability and outcomes for graduates. Based on the analysis, UC Merced received a rating of 4.5 stars out of a possible 5.

"Despite its young age, the university has something for everyone," states the report that also commented on UC Merced's groundbreaking research and innovation. "Research is a priority and touches on everything from renewable energy to artificial intelligence."

Also touted was UC Merced's diversity, athletics program, proximity to Yosemite National Park and graduation rate, which is 9% higher than schools with similar populations, according to the findings.

"The rating by Money magazine is further proof of UC Merced's standing as a world-class institution that offers a well-rounded college experience for its students," said UC Merced Chancellor Juan Sánchez Muñoz. "Our pursuit of student success will continue to drive us forward as we grow and transform the community, the region and beyond."

This is the first year the star rating system has been utilized by Money, a change that follows recent criticism of college ranking systems for focusing on a one-size-fits-all approach. In the magazine's piece that explains the reasoning behind the switch, Money states "there are multiple ways for a school to provide value, and multiple 'best' colleges, depending on your goals and priorities."
