Grad Students Awarded Community Research Funding

April 26, 2013

Three UC Merced graduate students have been awarded research fellowships from the campus’s Resource Center for Community Engaged Scholarship (ReCCES).

The $3,000 awards will support them in conducting research this summer.

“We are proud to recognize innovative examples of community-engaged research, and we will showcase the research on campus and in our community” said ReCCES co-director and anthropology Professor Robin DeLugan.

The recipients are:
  • Carlos Bazúa, in World Cultures, who will study the attitudes and level of cultural preservation, including language, of modern-day Maya diaspora with his community partners Grupo Mayaab, of San Francisco and Grupo Maya, of Oakland.
  • Paul Carroll, in Psychological Sciences, who is looking at the effectiveness of positive-discipline parenting classes with his community partner, the Merced County Office of Education Family Resource Council.
  • Shanna Erickson, in Cognitive and Information Sciences, who is trying to determine whether students are under- or overconfident relative to their performance in math with her community partner, Ceres Unified School District.

ReCCES helps community members connect with UC Merced students, faculty and staff members so they can work together toward common research goals. More information can be found online.
