November 7, 2019 - 7:00pm

Guest Speaker : Eileen Camfield

Framing New Narratives About Gen Z to Foster Student Resilience:

Culturally responsive pedagogy necessitates having a growth mindset about all students. However, stereotypes about Gen Z students can shape instructors' unconscious biases and inhibit students' sense of belonging and success. Camfield will discuss her educational research aimed at re-framing toxic narratives to better support these students. This talk will unpack some fixed beliefs about Gen Z students and examine assumptions. She will explore how they hinder or help our pedagogical endeavors and imagine alternative narratives that might better align with our educational emission and be conductive in serving students well. Attendees will emerge with a more empathetic understanding of today's students as well as practical strategies to building student resilience and leveraging learning.
