Dr. Edward Orozco Flores

Professor of Sociology

Professor Flores has a BA in Sociology from the University of the Pacific and an MA in Sociology from the University of Warwick. He received his PhD in Sociology at the University of Southern California in 2010. He has published two books: 1) Prophetic Redemption: Political Activism and Redemption after Incarceration (New York University Press, 2018); and 2) God’s Gangs: Barrio Ministry, Masculinity and Gang Recovery (New York University Press, 2014). His research specializes in studies of civic religion, immigration, race, gender and community-level organizing.

 

He is the recipient of multiple awards from the American Sociological Association, including the 2014 Distinguished Contribution to Research Book Award, Section on Latina/o Sociology, and Honorable Mention un 2017 for the Best Publication Award, Section on Body and Embodiment. He has also been honored for his community work with the 2017 Partner of the Year Award, from Faith in Merced (PICO National Network/Faith in Action affiliate).
